When purchasing try and go for natural materials as much as possible such as from these designers.
 
Buy the best quality you can afford for durability and consider recovering or renovating when they do need a spruce up.
 
Rehome through second hand stores, Freecycle  or TradeMe.
 
 If it is really past it, dismantle the furniture and recycle as many bits as possible independently.
