Digital technology provides great opportunities for avoiding rubbish by avoiding dvds, cds etc through the use of usb sticks, mp3 downloads, movies on demand and e-books.
However, dealing with e-waste is a big issue considering the shear volume of it and the various materials (some of which are extremely toxic) needed in the construction, and which need safe management in disposal if they are not to cause harm.
So, where possible it is good to have devices that can do many things, for example, a laptop that serves as a computer, stereo, DVD player and e-book reader rather than having one of each.
Secondly, when purchasing devices look for ones in which their environmental impact has been considered, look into whether second hand would suit, or an upgrade of your existing technology. This site gives ideas on computers and we'd be keen to hear if anyone has suggestions regarding other devices.
